Descripción

The proposed research addresses the need to limit US reliance on fossil fuel resources to support fuel and chemical use. Biomass feedstocks offer a renewable source of carbon that can be converted to bioenergy and useful biobased products. Development of effective conversion methods can supportenhancement of rural economiesas well as sustainable bioenergy production systems. Examination ofdiverse feedstock options will increase opportunites for mulitple regions in the US including the southeast. Conversion methods for sugar, starch and lignocellulosic cropsthat are low risk investments and can thrive in thesoutheast region will beinvestigated.Various fermentation technologies and gasification methods will be examined and thefeasiblity of integration into a bioenergy/product production system will be determined.Field days and demonstrations as well asconferences, symposiaand scientifc publications will be used to reach target audiences. The overall goal for this project is to identify feasible processes for the production of value-added products from renewable biomass that can offer opportunities for enhanced farmer benefit and agricultural sustainability.
