The U.S. needs to capitalize on the potential talent of all its citizens to advance health, security and food production for the nation and a growing world population. There are many underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and in the agricultural disciplines, that are in need of focused efforts to increase participation. This NIFA REEU program will offer a summer research experience for undergraduates from diverse, underrepresented populations to participate directly in experiential research programs. A 9 week program, offered during three consecutive summers, will be structured to provide relevant research experiences and career guidance for all participants. Expert faculty in different but cohesive specialty areas will provide mentoring for the enrolled students.Honey bees and native bees are responsible for pollinating one third of all food sources and are critical to maintaining crop yields and food security for human populations around the world. The social, political, and scientific implications are enormous, with the USDA and the Land Grant University system playing an integral role in promoting honey bee health and productivity. Partnering in these efforts with university research programs, student and academic programs, the agbiotech industry, extension outreach activities, and other interdisciplinary life science programs will be needed for success in maintaining healthy, sustaining bee populations. Similarly, mcrobiology and microbiologists will play a critical role in advancing food production and economic development around the world. American Academy of Microbiology reports emphasize the enormous economic impact microbiology will have on agricultural, environmental, biotechnology, and health initiatives in the near future. Together, Bees and Microbes provide the scientific, disciplinary focus in which our recruited students will engage in mentored research and career development programs.
